Adhan: The Call to Prayer
Adhan is made at the time of each Salah
to announce the prayer time has come
in and to call people to pray. The mu'adhdhin (muzzein,
one giving the call) recites the adhan in a loud, melodious voice,
pausing after each line. Lift your hands, palms open, and put your
fingers in your ears as you give the call. Turn your head to the right
as you say “Hayya ‘ala-s-salah” and to the left
as you say “Hayya ‘ala-l-falah”.

Come to the prayer. Come to the prayer.
Come to success. Come to success.
Allâh is Supreme! Allâh is Supreme!
There is no god but Allâh

Note: For al-fajr (the morning prayer), the following words are added
just after hayya ‘ala-s-salâh.
as-salâtu
khayrum min an-nowm
a s-salâtu
khayrum min an-nowm |
Prayer is better than sleep
Prayer is better than sleep |
It is customary for those hearing the adhan to repeat each
line. On the lines beging with "hayya ‘ala"
(Come into...), say the following:
|
lâ hawla wa lâ quwwata illâ bi-llâh
|
There is no power and no strength except by Allâh. |
After the call has been made, it is customary for everyone listening to recite a du‘a (supplication):
|
allâhumma rabba hâdhihi-d-da‘wati-t-tâmmâti
wa salâti-l-qâ'imati âti
muhammadan
al-wasîlati wa-l-fadîlata
wa-b‘ath-hu maqâmam-mahmûdâ
alladhî wa‘adtah |
O Allâh! Lord of this perfect call
and everlasting prayer, grant Muhammad nearness
and excellence
and raise him to the station of glory
which You have promised him
